Spotted Coral-root Orchid (Corallorhiza maculata) is a member of the Orchid Family (Orchidaceae). It is also known as dragon's claw. It is found in shady moist forest settings ranging from Canada to Mexico and throughout the Western United States. The 40 centimeter stem grows up from a fungal mass deep in the ground. It dervies its nutriments from its fungal partner which in turn absorbs these nutrients from the roots of neary trees. The name is derived from the plants jointed roots which are said to resemble coral.
